A new gadget from Digital Innovations allows parents to control how long their gamers can play before their console is turned off. GameDr. gives even gamers 10 minute and 1 minute notices before their time is up so they can hurry to save points (hopefully!). Parents can control the device with a 4-digit password and the system is tamper-proof; the power cord locks directly into the timer, and there are even "lock tabs" that go over the plug so it can't be turned off. If the gamer has to take a break, he or she can pause their allowed block of gaming so they don't miss a minute. GameDr. costs $29.99.
"Our timer device enables parents to establish responsible guidelines that are flexible so parents can modify them as situations change. This also helps children learn to become more responsible for their behavior. Both parents and their children win because GameDr Video Game Timer eliminates stress and removes the cause of duress that often jeopardizes a peaceful home environment," said Gary Masching, CEO of Digital Innovations.
There are plenty of other options to control access to gaming consoles, DVD players, and TV; even Microsoft offers a timer for its Xbox 360, as well as other family control options like access to Xbox Live.
Video game "addiction" has recently become quite the hot topic for journalists, as per a recent study by Iowa State University's Dr. Douglas Gentile claimed that 1 out of 10 gamers show typical symptoms of addiction. The Entertainment Software Association hotly disputed the trial and questioned its methodology.
Additionally, the National Institute on Media and the Family commented, "One study will not determine if gaming is addictive for some kids. Again, additional research is required to determine if video games are as 'addictive' as gambling and alcohol. With this additional research, the medical community can make an educated decision on video games and addiction."
Do gadgets like this encourage parents to become more involved in their kid's gaming, or is it a simple solution to what should be addressed with communication? Let us know what you think in the comments.
