How do I protect my child from talking with strangers in online games?

How do I protect my child from talking with strangers in online games?

First off, the basic rules you already use with your children are easily applied to the online world. Remind your kids not to chat with strangers online and to NEVER give out personal information about themselves or the family. It is also always a good idea to check out the sites your children frequent and pay particular attention to sites that collect personal information. If you don't agree with the privacy statement of a particular site or if you don't want to give away any of your child's personal information, a little searching may lead you to a similar site that doesn't request any information at all. You can also block inappropriate content from your children by enabling the parental controls provided with most new systems.

I'm gonna say this straight up. bud is exactly right. Don't let them play online then if you don't want them to talk to "strangers". Personally, I've met some pretty cool people online, since I have a PS3, but then again, I am also almost nineteen. I guess parents have to realize that society's changed and pre-teens or whatever are going to be talking to people online in the first place. This topic kinda contradicts itself, since most games & systems, you have to be at least sixteen to sign up anyways, so maybe you guys should also check up on that. :) and the only online games there really are, they're rated 17+. Maybe.. you guys shouldn't buy your kids games that have online play? All in all, kids do it anyways, whether the parents know/like it or not. I've met many kids under the age of seventeen on online video games, so yeah, it's gonna happen either way.
