How do I know if a video game is too violent for my child?

The easiest way to get a glimpse at the content in a game that you might purchase for your children is known as the ESRB guide. The Entertainment Software Rating Board, or ESRB, is an independent company that examines the content of games before they're released.

Similar to how films are rated, the ESRB has different ratings that help guide you to what is appropriate for different age ranges. There are also "descriptors" listed on the games, outlining specifically what may be offensive; violence, crude humor, sexual situations and many more.

If the child can understand that the games aren't real and that they shouldn't just blurt out every obscene thing they have ever heard in public, than they can play pretty much anything they want. Sticking an age warning on a game is like what we do with alcohal: you can't do it now, but once you hit 21 you can drink yourself to death. There's no point in age limiting something. Games are no different from movies or even books. I was exposed to more things through books and even commercials on TV than through video games. But really, have you ever seen an age warning on a novel?

Posted by j00biggs00j on 12/19/2008 2:45 pm: its not weather or not the game is to violent, its weather or not the child is mature enough to understand its just a game, and that it doesnt happen in the real world as often or as commonly in real life. I think as a parent, you should know your child, and if u feel you know them and understand who they are, the question should be retorical.
