Eight Real Video Game Dangers for Kids

Parents and politicians regularly blame video games for everything from childhood obesity to teen violence. While the science doesn't necessarily back that up -- here are eight real concerns about kids and games.

Video games -- it's the multi billion-dollar juggernaut that's rapidly taking over TV and film as the preferred form of entertainment for an entire generation. Like other 'new' forms of media, games often bear the blame for childhood obesity and teen violence. Science doesn't directly link gaming to one or the other, but parents should stay aware of these eight other real concerns about games.

Ratings on games exist for a reason. If a parent has a child that is 15 or younger, then they shouldn't be the one to buy the kid a very graphic game. Pure and simple. The problem isn't video games, but with parenting. Parents spoil their brats and turn into rugs to be walked on by buying them whatever they want, and in the situation of video games, let them play for hours on end because they see the TV as a babysitter. If a child becomes bitter, who cares? It's called growing up. When you become an adult, you cant sit around and play video games all day.

I am 13 years old. I am a an A+ and B+ student. Video games aren't to blame for child obsiety. Its your fault for feeding your kids the food they eat. And games don't cause teen violence. That comes from child abuse and bullying. So if i found that out and i'm 13 any normal adult should know that. Video games are just their to play when you are bored.

Well unfortenetly the games of today are not the games of yesterday like super mario bros or contra i am in my 20's and i grew up with the NES i like the games today not all of them to me there is no reason to make a game to GTA games should not have sex,****,extreme excessive violence,or criminal goals,is it a game or real life come on anyone who plays a game with that in mind has no life don't get me wrong i like doom 3 which is violent but its not mindless like GTA for example which i will never play.sometimes i wish today was like the 80's and even early 90's for games.2d all the way old school the best way.but dont blame the game you have to pick up the controller just like you have to pick up the gun the tool or weapon is not the problem the person is.

OK video games can be harmful if ur children are sensitive. But in most it actually stimulates the brain. Hospitals have started using video games as a sort of treatment to expand the child's creativity and to take the child's mind off his/her pain. Also Call of Duty is not that bad because it contains real soldier do***enteries and teaches the gamer about WWII. Believe what you want but I personally think that video games are a good thing.

My sister just took my nephew to purchase the lastest and best game station out there. He bought it himself with bonds my father gave him for collage. My sister said when they got to the car he hugged and kissed the game before strapping it it the baby seat. He treats his Mom like **** but has this much affection for a game?? Something is definitly wrong!!!

Wow...that last picture of the boy in front of the TV really hits home. For parents who are into teaching moderation for their kids on this very subject...there's a new kids book coming out in a month or so called "Sofa Boy" about a young kid who DOES get addicted to videogames and TV and all the humorous repercussions that come of it. You can pre-order it from Atlasbooks.com as well as Amazon.com and others. Check out the pic: http://www.amazon.com/Sofa-Boy-Scott-Langteau/dp/0615251250/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1229906105&sr=8-1

Okay iam a gamer im not going to lie, i love them. But video games are a two sided topic and i deifentally beleive that kids that play "M" games don't do the **** they see on games do you see any kids going up to people with lets say...a rocket launcher? and shooting people with it? do you see them taking your husbands or your gun and shooting someone? ys have shot themselves before with guns...but not because of games because the parents were stupid enough to leave it in a unsecure place. Videogames bring people closer together and actually cause less violence in my eyes. Look at lets use... call of duty or rainbow six vegas...those games are violent yea? yes thats correct but there is teams in some of the lobbies and it shows how to operate using teamwork which in general brings them closer together you can meet people and keep gaming with them. I don't think it's really wrong for a ten year old kid to be playing mature games..... most parents curse weather they like to admit it or not. So cursing in videogames or anything related to bad language should not even be metioned.

wow u people are all sad i mean seriously let kids play games i am not saying let your 4 year old have Grand Theft Auto San Andreas with the hot coffee mod but seriously. Like animeglobo sais would u rather your kid snort cocaine or smoke weed?? I and i mean seriously half of you people have no idea what your talking about! And lightningshark7 makes a great point too but all the people who want to blame video games because YOU ARE LOUSY PARENTS ITS YOUR FAULT!!! a few generations ago it was televisions ruining young people video games are just a new scape goat. i am 15 years old and i like to spend my free time gaming and playing sports i have good grades and i have never killed anyone b 4 like you would want everyone to think that i have or that i have a mental deficiancy because of games.
